I attended my very first SurlyFest over the weekend. The 5th annual SurlyFest was held at their Brooklyn Center Brewery. Hundreds of us lined up outside patiently waiting for our 1/2 liter steins to sample the finest of what Surly had to offer. Each ticket holder was given a wristband with three tabs that were good for four beers. I know it doesn’t sound like much but with every beer averaging out between 4.5-6.6% ABV, four 1/2 liter beers were plenty!
SurlyFest 2012 Highlights:
-
Beer! Beer was flowing in three different locations: under two 20×20 tents and in the brewery Tap Room. Featured beers of the day included; hell, Furious, SurlyFest, Cynic, Bender, Bandwagon IPA, Cacad! Bender and fiery hell.
-
Stein Rinsing Station: Genius idea! Rinsing station was great inbetween pours.
-
Bike Racks: Personally I couldn’t imagine drinking four beers and then riding my bike home but to each his own!
-
Broken Steins: Saw a guy drop his stein once and cracked it then dropped it again and shattered it. It was sad but super funny!
-
Drop Off & Pick Up Zone Signs
-
Food Venders came prepared with much needed munchies; Aki’s Backstube, Natedogs, Vellee Dell, Gastrotruck, Rusty Taco, Smack Shack.
-
Bands; The Goondas, Koo Koo Kanga Roo & Abstract Artimus. Honestly even though there were three bands who played this fest I only remember one. Koo Koo Kanga Roo won me over with their karate chops & air kicks. Their anthem of singing “I want PB&J with NO CRUST!” really got the crowd going. This kid hip-hop band totally stole the show!
